Letter from the Superintendent
Greetings from the Superintendent
Welcome to the 2007-2008 School Year in the Oak Park School District! As I begin my third
year as superintendent, I am excited by the great strides that the District has made in
academic achievement and infrastructure improvement on our journey from a “Good to Great”
educational institution.
Our most spectacular news is the opening of the Oak Park Preparatory Academy in the Clinton
Education Center building. The building was completely renovated over the summer and
Grades 8 and 9 are now housed there. We had a wonderful turnout at our Open House in
August and received an overwhelmingly positive response from the community.
Another of our achievements is the implementation of trimesters at the secondary level
schools. This gives the students the opportunity to satisfy the more rigorous state
academic requirements in the most efficient manner.
All of our schools met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) last year and we are continuing to
improve academic achievement at all levels. We have a new dual enrollment program with
Oakland University allowing our high school students to attain college credit while still
in high school. We also have a new forensic science program as part of our dual enrollment
program with Oakland Community College. The Peoples Trust Credit Union has made a
commitment to OPHS and opened an office in the school that will guide students in the
correct management of money and credit. As you can see, we are working hard to make sure
that the students of Oak Park have as many cutting edge advantages as is possible.
I especially want to thank the community for supporting our sinking fund millage proposal
in May which has made all the infrastructure repairs and improvements we have made
possible. I would like to invite the community to visit our schools, especially the Oak
Park Preparatory Academy (OPPA), and see your tax dollars at work. We will continue to
upgrade as we move forward. Our students and community deserve only the best!
Yours in education,
Sandra J. Harris, Ed.D.
Superintendent
