Volunteer & Visitor Requirements & Information

 Oak Park Schools Volunteer & Visitor Guidelines

Oak Park Schools deeply values our volunteers, thank you for your interest in supporting our students!

Volunteer Requirements (Board Policy 7009)

To ensure student safety, all volunteers must:

  • Complete a Volunteer Background Check Acknowledgement Form

  • Submit the form with a valid driver’s license or state ID to the main office of the school

  • Undergo a free ICHAT background check, valid for the entire school year and usable across multiple buildings/events

Note: Incomplete forms or those missing ID will not be processed.

Examples of Volunteer Roles:

  • Reading with students

  • Assisting in classrooms or lunchrooms

  • Making copies

  • Chaperoning field trips

  • Supporting athletic, band, cheer, or other school-sponsored events

Overnight Volunteers

For overnight events (e.g., field trips, band, athletics), volunteers must:

  • Complete a CHRISS Live Scan fingerprinting via a time-sensitive form provided by Human Resources.

  • Pick up the form at the Administration Office (13900 Granzon, Oak Park, MI 48237)

  • Cover the cost of fingerprinting

Volunteer Commitments

All volunteers are expected to:

  • Support a safe, caring learning environment

  • Keep student information confidential

  • Follow Board policies and district guidelines

  • Check in/out at the main office or event site

  • Limit cell phone use to emergencies

  • Avoid photography or recording of students

Visitor Guidelines (Board Policy 6012)

Visitors do not require a background check but must schedule visits in advance with the building principal. Visits should be brief (5–10 minutes) and limited to:

  • Parent/teacher conferences

  • Dropping off items (lunch, clothes, medicine)

  • Guest speaking or reading (monitored by staff)

Note: Any individual interacting with students is considered a volunteer and must follow Policy 7009.

The word “individual,” when used in Policy 6012, includes a student’s other relatives who are not the student’s parent or legal guardian.
