Oak Park Schools Mourns the Passing of Beloved Educator Mr. Dwayne Harvey
Oak Park Schools is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Dwayne Harvey, a valued and beloved member of the teaching staff at Oak Park High School, who passed away last week following a car accident.
Mr. Harvey was much more than an educator. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, colleague, mentor, and friend. At Oak Park High School, he was known for his warm smile, positive spirit, and genuine connection with students. He was approachable, encouraging, and deeply committed to the young people he served. Even on days when he may not have been feeling his best, Mr. Harvey showed up and gave his best. His dedication was remarkable.
His commitment extended well beyond the classroom. Mr. Harvey served as the senior class sponsor for the Oak Park High School Class of 2026, dedicating countless hours to the senior class and helping make their final year at Oak Park High School memorable.
Oak Park Education Association President Desiree’ Fuller, Ed.S., reflected on what Mr. Harvey meant to his colleagues:
“Mr. Harvey was deeply loved and respected by all of us, and we will always cherish the endless compassion, advice, comforting hugs, and bright smiles he shared so freely. Because he loved his students and his peers with such a gentle, patient heart, we are mourning the heartbreaking loss of a true family member rather than just a colleague. His encouraging spirit brought so much warmth into our lives, and he will be forever missed.”
Those who knew Mr. Harvey also knew of his love for the musical artist Prince and his favorite color, purple. On Friday, Oak Park High School students and staff plan to honor his life and legacy by wearing purple and celebrating the joy and positive energy he brought to our school community, including through some of the music he loved.
We recognize that the loss of a member of our school community affects people in different ways. Oak Park Schools provides additional support for students and employees throughout the week, including access to counselors with the assistance of Oakland Schools. We encourage our students, families, and staff to continue extending kindness, compassion, and support to one another during this difficult time.
Mr. Harvey’s career in education did not begin at Oak Park High School, and his service as an educator extended far beyond our district. We know that students, colleagues, and communities he served throughout his career are grieving alongside us, and we extend our deepest sympathies to them as well.
Our thoughts and condolences remain with Mr. Harvey’s family, friends, students, colleagues, and all who knew and cared for him. We respectfully ask that the privacy of his family and loved ones be honored as they grieve this tremendous loss.
Mr. Harvey will be remembered for his kindness, his dedication to students, and the positive presence he brought to Oak Park High School each day. He will always be a part of the Oak Park Schools family and will be deeply missed.
